JERRY CRUNCHER:  That Mr. Carton was a smart one all right. If he hadn’t pointed out that he and Mr. Darnay looked so much alike I believe Mr. Darnay might be hanging from a noose about now.  Everyone left the courthouse and went to the local pub to celebrate Mr. Darnay's acquittal. I followed them cause I could always use a little nip or two.

     At the pub I overheard Mr. Carton and Mr. Darnay talking about Miss Lucy. The two of them had both fallen in love with her and Mr. Carton seemed a little jealous of Mr. Darnay. I think he didn’t like him too much anyway. Maybe he reminded him of what he might ave been. And then I heard Mr. Carton say “Is it worth being tried for one's life, to be the object of Lucy's sympathy and compassion?" And Mr. Darnay says, "Mr. Carton you've had too much to drink".  And Carton said, "Well, I’m a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me." After that statement, Mr. Darnay went back to the Manette's table and leaned over and kissed Miss Lucy's hand. Mr. Carton enviously watched the two of them as he sat in the corner of the pub the rest of the night all by himself and just drank and drank and drank. Poor Mr. Carton.
