MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
Music & Lyrics by Christopher Meredith ©2021
JERRY CRUNCHER: So let me tell you a little bit about meself. I’m married. Me wife, she’s always praying and flopping about, and me boy, now we all lived up in London. I’m what you call a Resurrection man. I worked mostly at night for some local doctors looking for research material, if you know what I mean, and I was also the odd-job-man for Mr. Lorry at Tellson's bank in Paris and in London, which is why I know so much!
In 1759, I was in Paris on an errand for Mr. Lorry and after I finished me job I went out for a nip. On me way, I hear this music coming from the Marquis Saint Evrémondes courtyard where all his aristocratic friends were aving one of them masquerade parties. A large crowd of poor people was all huddled outside his gates watching the feast through the bars, and hoping for a scrap of food to fill their empty bellies. The Marquis saw these two young sisters outside the gates that caught his fancy, so he invited them both inside to the party.
(MARQUIS)
I AM THE MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT
POWER AND WEALTH ARE MY ATTRIBUTES
GREED AND DECEIT ARE MY CHARMS
CHAMPAGNE AND CAVIAR BREAKFASTS
CHOCOLATES AND VINTAGE WINE LUNCH
ROAST GOOSE AND PHEASANT FOR DINNER
BRANDY AND DANCING TILL ONE
(CHORUS)
I AM THE MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT
POWER AND WEALTH ARE MY ATTRIBUTES
GREED AND DECEIT ARE MY CHARMS
(MARQUIS)
POVERTY, HUNGER IS SUCH A BORE
BEGGARS AND PEDDLERS NO FUN
I ONLY MINGLE WITH UPPERCLASS
NOBLEMAN, KINGS THEY'RE MY CHUMS
(CHORUS)
I AM THE MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT
POWER AND WEALTH ARE MY ATTRIBUTES
GREED AND DECEIT ARE MY CHARMS
(INSTRUMENTAL)
(MARQUIS)
I BELIEVE THIS WORLD WAS MADE FOR ME
EVERYTHING ON IT IS MINE
NOBODY ELSE COULD DESERVE IT MORE
FOR NO ONE IS GREATER THAN I
(CHORUS)
I AM THE MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
I ALWAYS GET WHAT I WANT
POWER AND WEALTH ARE MY ATTRIBUTES
GREED AND DECEIT ARE MY CHARMS
JERRY CRUNCHER: He tried to kiss one of the girls, but she pushed him away. The Marquis continued to struggle with her and she slapped him across his face. Outraged, he wrapped his hands around her tiny little neck and squeezed the livin' life right outa her. And Charles Darnay, the young nephew of the Marquis and his servant Gabelle watched in horror and disbelief from a balcony above.
(YOUNG SISTER)
DEAD... OH, NO SHE CAN'T BE DEAD!
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SHE IS GONE
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK GOLD CAN PAY FOR THIS
WHAT MAKES YOUR BLOOD RUN SO COLD
JERRY CRUNCHER: Her sister screamed for help and A doctor Manette showed up to try and save the girl but it was too late and she died. They carried the girls body back through the gates and left her in the street. And as the dead girls sister wept for her, the Marquis tossed a gold coin at her feet. And not wanting anyone else to know what he had done, he had the good doctor Manette locked away in the Bastille. And none of them said nothin'! And I never said nothin', till now!.
(MARQUIS)
I DIDN'T CALL FOR A DOCTOR
GUARDS TAKE HIM, TAKE HIM AWAY
I'LL TEACH YOU TO MEDDLE IN MY AFFAIRS
YOU'LL LEARN I ALWAYS GET MY WAY
(YOUNG SISTER)
HE IS THE MARQUIS SAINT EVRÉMONDE
HE ALWAYS TAKES WHAT HE WANTS
HATEFUL AND CRUEL LIKE NO OTHER MAN
I WON'T FORGET WHAT HE’S DONE
