JERRY CRUNCHER: After the wedding Mr. Darnay told Dr. Manette, that he was the indeed the nephew of the Marquis Saint Evrémonde. Imagine that! The nephew of the man that locked him away for 18 years was now his son-in-law! Who would of thought! Anyway, almost immediately, a change came over Dr. Manette. His eyes kind of swirled about in his head and he looked awful lost. I heard that later that night Miss Pross and Mr. Lorry found Dr. Manette in the basement with his shoemaker's bench again. Tap tap tap. Poor Dr. Manette!
Now I was hoping that this would be my last trip to Paris, but Mr. Lorry said business is business and that I had to go. The countryside laid in ruins and streets were desolate. When I got to Tellson’s I heard that the Defarges were at the Marquis’s home last night. They went there, looking for Gabelle, the Marquis’s servant. They found him huddled in the courtyard trying to hide from the revolutionaries. Madame Defarge forced him to write a note to Mr. Darnay, pleading him to come back to France and rescue him from certain death. He reluctantly wrote the letter and as soon as he finished they had a messenger deliver it to London and Gabelle was taken off to prison. The Defarges then set the house on fire. I can still see the flames. It was a sight! Like Souls dancing in the sky!
(ERNEST & MADAME DEFARGE)
WE ARE NOT ALONE
OTHERS BEAR THE SAME WEIGHT
A HISTORY OF GREED AND POWER
A PAST WRAPPED UP IN HATE
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG
IN THIS FIST OF RAGE
AND AS THE WALLS MOVE CLOSER
BREAKAWAY
(CHORUS)
CAN YOU HEAR THE CALLING
VOICES IN THE WIND
CAN YOU HEAR THEM CALLING
CRYING OUT FOR CHANGE
(ERNEST & MADAME DEFARGE)
WE WILL TURN THE TIDES
KEEP ALIVE THIS RAGING SEA
A STORM BORN OUT OF DISCONTENT
THE END WILL JUSTIFY OUR MEANS
WE MUST NOT FORGET THEM
DON'T PERPETUATE THE LIES
WE MUST PROTECT THEM
WE MUST SURVIVE
(CHORUS)
CAN YOU HEAR THE CALLING
VOICES IN THE WIND
CAN YOU HEAR THEM CALLING
CRYING OUT FOR CHANGE
CAN YOU HEAR THE VOICES
CALLING IN THE WIND
CAN YOU HEAR THE FALLING
THE BITTER SOUND OF RAGE
(ERNEST & MADAME DEFARGE)
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
CAN WE CHANGE THE PAST
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
WILL WE MAKE IT LAST
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
CAN WE DRAW A FINER LINE
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
WILL WE FIND THE END
THERE IS LITTLE TIME
IT COMES BUT NEVER STAYS
IF WE DON'T STIR THE WATERS
WE WON’T SEIZE THE DAY
WE MUST NOT FORGET THEM
DON'T PERPETUATE THE LIES
WE MUST PROTECT THEM
WE MUST SURVIVE
(CHORUS)
CAN YOU HEAR THE CALLING
VOICES IN THE WIND
CAN YOU HEAR THEM CALLING
CRYING OUT FOR CHANGE
CAN YOU HEAR THE VOICES
CALLING IN THE WIND
CAN YOU HEAR THE CALLING
